Car Seat Checks

4 steps

Car crashes are a leading cause of death among infants and children. Crashes affect young bodies differently – they need extra protection. Child restraints reduce the risk of injury and death during crashes dramatically, yet many car seats are used incorrectly, or children are in an improper seat for their age, size and development.

Did you know:

-Nearly 9 out of 10 car seats checked in La Crosse County needed adjustment?

-Children are safest rear facing? Many car seats can now accommodate children rear facing until age 3 or 4, depending on their size!

-Children under 4’9″ should likely be riding in a booster seat?

-Seats should move less than one inch side to side when installed correctly?

Seat Checks By Appointment

La Crosse County offers car seat checks by appointment. During the appointment a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician will check your car seat for recalls and expiration, ensure your child fits in the seat, and educate you on how to install the seat correctly in your vehicle. Technicians will also discuss next steps for your child and answer any questions you may have. There is a fee of up to $25 per seat check, we use a sliding fee scale based on income. The fee is waived for pregnant moms enrolled in the Prenatal Care Coordination program. Free seats (new and donated) may be available to those who qualify for select programs. Contact Maichor, Maggie or Ginny for more information.
